Reflection on project 5

Animal drawings gave me a kind of challenge. The last study in exercise 4 brought me closer to my intention with more free gestural and expressive marks. I really like that but I need to study it more. Somehow I feel that I tend towards a more realistic drawing when I focus quite deep on shapes, form and tones.  I was missing a bit the loose and expressive ‘touch’.

Possible further options:
– more contrasting marks (line and free expressive strokes),
– some line marks fading into the background or purely imaginative, and
– washes overlapping shapes and creative new  tones and visual effects.

I will consider this during the next project and I will see how I can bring this together for the next assignment. I feel that some of my sketchbook drawings are closer to my heart. Another idea would be to work rather partly in surrounding space, using  marks only where needed for form perception or atmospheric. More to experiment would be also on selective use of color. But these might be just different angles of my learning curve. Therefore I am really looking forward to new exercises and experiments. I will see how to get some of my sketchbook ideas better transferred onto larger scale.

Regarding selective use of colour I found in a  magazine one oil painting from Yan Pei-Ming ‘Wild game: Second way of the tigers‘, 2014. The picture is quite monochrome and rather realistically painted but with some free and expressive strokes. The front plane kept my attention where the artist applied a few brush strokes in warm ochre colour, making the tigers appearing from the fog, cloudiness of the background and creating visual depth. Pei-Ming applied broad brush strokes and in some areas the positive and negatives spaces seem to melt with each other. I find this is an interesting aspect in using selectively colour.
