Based on my previous works, contextual research and experiments I continued with two more elaborated works on board to explore the space of the site and my support.
Materiality and surface
Deeper investigation and exploration of textured board markings in acrylic and mud. I went back and forth over the surface with the flat and sharp edges of a spatula to add and remove applied mud and paint, leaving random spaces. For an enforced visual effect of stones, pebbles I applied in #3 charcoal powered and white gouache (back and force). In #4 I applied the earlier tested approach of imprints with a pebble and charcoal powder (plus gum arabic). I was searching how to make water surface perception and applied horizontal markings with white gouache and black acrylic (#3) and with the sharp edge of a spatula (#4). As in the previous 2 works (#1 and #2) I kept the black horizon on the top in bold contract to the lighter foreground that has more details.
Material: found mud and particles from site, acrylic paint, charcoal powder & stick, sepia pigment, gouache, water
Support: 70 x 50 cm canvas board

The physical intensity of rubbing on and into the surface, touching and feeling the particles as barriers that act as mark makers, does provide a sense of the site. It is a walking over the surface with my fingers. A discovery tour and interaction of material, structure and markings. Abstract in its markings, somehow between Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter.

Hello Stefan
I have found your analogy and the actual pieces shown above quite mysterious with hidden depths, almost like being in the depths of the ocean floor. That said about image 3 I go to image 4 which shows almost as though objects are surfacing as you walk across the surface and the bulges linger in what seem s like fog or the sea bed sand billowing above the surface.
I am not quite critique savy yet but these are what I see. I applaud your investigation into your materials for effect. The added colour on image 4 gives it something else, perhaps an awareness of blood or a sea creature? The back seems as though one could walk through into another arena of mysteriousness and darkness – a cave maybe or even the unknown – the unknown a curious thing and is scary just like the top of the image. Your research and physicality of the materials is really inspiring.
May I just mention two misspellings and hope you don’t mind – its not ‘force’ but to and forth and ‘randomly’ is leaving random spaces. the flat and the sharp edges – take out ‘the’.
Don’t shout at me!! LOL
Hi Diana – thanks for your appreciated and comprehensive comments. Never mind – I took gladly your corrections. I am very happy about it. At the moment I am packing my shipment for assessment. Final stage of deciding what goes in and what not.
Stefan
Hi Stefan – you are welcome. Oh goodness the final stage and another scary moment with decisions and indecisions on what to send. A very time consuming and stressful part of the course. Very best wishes for a successful outcome and can only imagine with your efforts and time put in it will be a good one. Keep me posted
Diana 🙂
Thanks Diana – I did it and submission done. Now I have to wait and see. So I can refocus completely on my other course unit PoP1. Take care Stefan
